On the one hand, the term Plaster of Paris is sometimes used to refer to something called ‘beta gypsum’. Broadly speaking, different types of plaster can be divided into two categories. These are ‘beta’ and ‘alpha’ gypsum. This refers to how their ingredients are heated during production. Ensure you have the right plastering tools, equipment and know how before you start, so you don’t end up having to stop half way through. You don’t have to use exactly the same paint you’ve chosen for the final topcoat but you should use a similar colour for an even finish. Step 5 – Never let plaster dry on your tools, it can be extremely difficult to remove dried on plaster and can cause damage to your tools. Wash them down completely, straight away.

Don’t take too long putting the plaster on the wall and avoid playing with it too much. You can flatten and make it smooth as time goes. Why? Well how much plaster you will mix is always dependent how much water you start with. Usually, around half a bag of plaster is the most you can apply before the plaster sets if you’re new to the mixing game. The joints between the boards will need to be covered with scrim and mesh tape before the plasterer skims. You may have heard of lime plaster, but unless you’re working on an old or listed building, you don’t need to concern yourself with this type of plaster. Of course, the main reason for this is cost, so there’s no need to employ a plasterer. Instead, the screw holes are filled, the joints between the boards covered with paper tape (scrim) and then a jointing compound, and you’re good to go. It is known as tape and jointing. As you near to the finished mix you’re looking for a smooth, almost creamy consistency. If it’s still too watery then simply add more plaster a bit at a time until it feels right.
