I always hope for big things from HMM because the Christmas movies there are supposed to be more heartwarming. This movie belonged on the regular Hallmark channel. It is a basic romance, and there is nothing special about except maybe the lead actors. I didn't say it is bad, just nothing special. Home of the Scottish Opera, the National Theatre of Scotland and the Scottish Ballet, Glasgow is teeming with culture and perfect for a pre-Christmas getaway. Catch a matinee of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at The Kings Theatre on Bath Street or Treasure Island at the Pavilion Theatre. As mentioned, the story just doesn't grab me. It's pleasant enough. The premise isn't horribly overused and has some different angles, but it also relies on a lot of well-used subplots. There isn't a huge amount of tension or conflict and I thought what conflict existed was overplayed. It was frustrating that nobody would just tell Lucy (Ashley Greene), the leading lady who bumped her head and forgot everything, what had happened though. One of the fundamental ingredients of a Christmas movie is a heartwarming atmosphere. Though An Unforgettable Christmas possesses joyfulness, it feels forced, as do most situations in the story. One of the worst segments shows Lucy Lovett (yep, we even have cute names thrown in) losing her memory. Lucy's rushing down a snowy street when distracted by a street corner Santa and ends up arse-over-head on the pavement - insert retrograde amnesia here. The trouble with the sequence is that it's poorly written and unexceptionably filmed. Worst still, this is merely the opening, and the rest of the film follows a similar style. Even with the likes of Mr Christmas, Andrew Walker, portraying the male romantic lead, Zach, the cast does little to lift this Christmas Turkey out of its stereotypical funk. Lamentably, a few of the performers add to the movie's funkiness. Furthermore, 'Christmas on My Mind' pleases visually, lovely festive locations attractively and never drably or garishly shot. The music isn't as intrusive as it tends to be with Hallmark while the direction gets the job done well. The script doesn't get too cheesy or sentimental and does have a more natural flow when it becomes more settled. The story is not too heavy while taking itself seriously and is both warm-hearted and has a light touch when necessary. Christmas in Switzerland was the plan. And, when we decided specifically on Christmas in Zermatt, it was equivalent to stumbling upon a postcard-perfect, fairytale, snow-covered village. However, credit is due though for breaking away from the usual basic formula that most Hallmark Christmas films follow, and not only not wasting it but not doing it half-heartedly. It is done intriguingly and charmingly. In my view, the characters weren't bland, too perfect or annoying and were better developed than most characters in Hallmark's Christmas films. Ashley Greene is endearing to watch and her conflict to me was investable. Andrew W. Walker is completely at ease with his role and brings a lot of charm and empathy to a potentially over-stiff character. Their chemistry is sweet and genuine, not cloying at all. A debonair angel comes to Earth to help an Episcopalian bishop and his wife in their quest to raise money for the new church.
